Yes, paint expires, but not on a fixed date and not the way food does. The useful framing is this: an unopened can that has been stored well can stay usable for a long time, commonly quoted in years, though the real figure varies by product type, formulation and storage conditions. An opened can is a completely different question, and its life depends almost entirely on how well it was resealed and where it sat afterwards. The manufacturer date printed on the can and the product data sheet for that specific paint are the authority on shelf life. Everything else, including this article, is a method for deciding whether the can in front of you is still good.
That method takes about a minute and runs in a fixed order: smell it, look at it, then stir it. Do it in that order, because the first test can rule the can out before you waste effort on the other two.
Step one: smell it before you do anything else

Open the can and smell it from a sensible distance. Normal paint smells like paint. Water-based paint smells mild and faintly chemical. Oil-based smells strongly of solvent. Neither of those is a problem.
What you are listening for is a rancid, sour, foul or putrid smell, sometimes described as rotten eggs, sour milk or wet bin. That smell means microbial spoilage. Water-based paint contains water, and water plus organic binders is a growth medium once the preservative package in the paint has been exhausted or contaminated. Bacteria have grown in the can and produced gases and breakdown products.
There is no fixing this. Stirring will not help. Adding anything will not help. Painting over it will not help, because the smell comes back off the wall as the paint dries and can persist in the room for a long time afterwards. If the can smells foul, it is finished. Reseal it and send it down the disposal route that applies where you live.
Two things make spoilage more likely: an opened can that sat part full for a long time, and a can that got contaminated by dipping a dirty brush, adding water from a garden hose or leaving the lid loose. Sealing properly, as covered in storing leftover paint, is the prevention.
Step two: look at the surface
Once it passes the smell test, look at what is on top before you disturb it. What you see falls into two very different categories.

Mould deserves a note. Growth in the can means the preservative has been overwhelmed, and even if you skimmed it off, the paint is compromised throughout. It is not the same job as dealing with mould on a wall, which is a surface problem you can treat before painting as described in removing mould before painting. Step three: stir it and watch what happens
A skin is not a death sentence, and this trips people up constantly. A skin is just the top layer of paint that met the air and cured. The paint underneath can be perfectly good.
Handle it like this:
- Lift the skin off whole. Slide a stirrer or a putty knife under one edge and peel it out in one piece. Do not stir it in. Broken-up skin becomes rubbery lumps that end up as bumps on your wall.
- Scrape the inside walls of the can for dried film and remove that too.
- Stir slowly from the bottom. The pigment and solids settle into a dense layer at the base. Work the stirrer into it and lift it up through the liquid. Fast stirring whips air in, which you do not want.
- Keep going until it is uniform. This takes longer than people expect on a can that has stood for a year, several minutes of proper work. A paddle mixer on a slow drill setting does it faster if you have one.
- Judge the result. If the liquid on top re-incorporates smoothly and you end up with a consistent, creamy, even-coloured paint, the can has passed. If you are left with lumps that will not break down, a stringy texture, or liquid that refuses to blend back in, it has failed.
The failure signal that catches people out is separation that will not reverse. Normal settling looks alarming and stirs back in. A broken emulsion looks similar at first glance but never becomes uniform no matter how long you work at it. If five minutes of honest stirring has not produced smooth paint, stop.
Strain it if it is nearly there
Plenty of otherwise-good cans have a few bits in them: fragments of skin, a scrap of dried film off the rim, some grit from a brush. Straining fixes that.
- Pour the stirred paint through a fine mesh strainer, a paint filter cone or a piece of clean stocking stretched over a bucket.
- Use a second clean container as the destination so you do not pour it back over the debris you just removed.
- Strain the amount you need, not the whole can, if you are only doing a small job.
- If the strainer clogs immediately and repeatedly, that is a sign the paint has too much solid matter through it to be worth saving.
Straining is worth doing routinely on any can that has been open before, even one that looks clean. It costs a minute and it prevents the specks that show up glaringly on a finished wall.
Why frozen water-based paint is usually finished
Latex and acrylic paints are emulsions: solid binder particles held in suspension in water. Freezing turns the water to ice, the ice forces those particles together, and when it thaws they often do not go back into suspension. The result is a grainy, curdled or stringy paint that no amount of stirring fixes.
Some products survive a single mild freeze and stir back to normal. Many do not, and there is no reliable way to know in advance which yours is. So the practical rule is: if you know a can froze, test it thoroughly before you trust it, and if it comes back anything other than smooth and uniform, do not use it. Painting a wall with a partly broken emulsion gives you poor adhesion and a gritty finish that has to be sanded off and redone.
Oil-based paints are less vulnerable to freezing but thicken considerably in the cold and should be brought up to room temperature before you judge them. The storage advice in storing leftover paint exists mostly to prevent this failure mode in the first place.
Unopened versus opened cans

Speciality products behave differently again. Primers, sealers, two-part epoxies, some tinted bases and certain masonry products all have their own storage characteristics, and some are noticeably less forgiving than a standard wall emulsion. Always do a test patch before committing old paint to a wall
Even after a can passes every check, test it before you put it on something that matters. This takes ten minutes and saves entire re-do jobs.
- Paint a patch on a scrap board, an offcut of the same material, or an inconspicuous area you will cover anyway.
- Check it flows off the brush or roller normally and levels out rather than dragging or ropey-ing.

- Look at it in daylight for grit, specks, streaks and colour shift.
- Rub it gently with a damp cloth once dry to check it has actually formed a film rather than sitting there powdery.
- Compare the sheen against the existing wall, not just the colour. Old paint can dry to a different sheen level than it originally did.

The touch-up caveat: good paint does not always mean a good match
A can can be perfectly sound and still fail as a touch-up, because the paint is not the variable that changed. The wall is. Painted surfaces fade under light, yellow slightly with age, collect a film of household soil and get cleaned unevenly. Put three-year-old paint from a sound can onto a three-year-old wall and you can get a visible patch of exactly the right colour.
What helps:
- Match the sheen carefully. A sheen mismatch is more visible than a small colour mismatch, which is why the sheen level belongs on the label.
- Use the same application tool as the original. Roller texture and brush texture read differently under raking light.
- Feather the edges out rather than stopping hard, and work to a corner or trim line where you can.
- Do repairs sooner. The gap between wall and can only widens.
- Accept a full wall repaint when a patch will not settle in. The technique is in how to touch up paint.
When to stop trying and dispose of it
Some cans are not worth the effort. Write it off when you find any of these:
- A rancid, sour or foul smell of any strength.
- Visible mould or fuzzy growth on the surface.
- Lumps that will not disperse after several minutes of proper stirring.
- A stringy, ropey or curdled texture.
- Rust flaking off the can into the paint.
- A known freeze and thaw that has left the paint anything other than smooth.
- Liquid that separates straight back out after you have stirred it in.
- A test patch that stays soft, dries powdery, or dries gritty.
Once you have made that call, do not put liquid paint in a bin and do not pour it away. Water-based paint generally needs drying out to a solid first, and oil-based paint, stains, thinners and solvents are household hazardous waste in most places and need a proper collection point.
