What counts as fixed overhead?
Anything you pay whether or not you have work on. Rent, insurance, vehicle payments, software, admin salary, accounting. Paint and site labor are not overhead, they are direct cost.
Why divide by gross margin instead of subtracting?
Because only the margin portion of each sale is left to pay overhead with. At a 45 percent margin, every dollar of revenue contributes 45 cents.
What if my margin is lower than I think?
Then break even is much further away than it looks. Halving your margin doubles the revenue you need, which is why margin discipline matters more than sales volume.
