What is the difference between markup and margin?
Markup is profit as a share of your cost. Margin is profit as a share of the price you charge. The same job gives two different percentages, and margin is always the smaller of the two.
Is a 50 percent markup a 50 percent margin?
No. A 50 percent markup is a 33.3 percent margin. To actually earn a 50 percent margin you need a 100 percent markup, which is double the cost.
Which should I quote on?
Price on margin. Margin tells you what share of the money coming in is yours to keep, which is the number your business actually runs on.
