How many billable hours should I assume?
Count only hours you can actually invoice. A two painter crew working 45 weeks rarely bills more than about 3,600 hours between them once travel, estimating and admin come out.
Why not just add a percentage to each quote?
You can, but only if the percentage is derived from real overhead and real billable hours. A number picked because it sounds right is where under-recovery starts.
What happens if I overestimate billable hours?
You under-recover overhead on every job. Being optimistic about billable hours is one of the quietest ways to price too low all year.
