Why is overhead divided rather than added?
Because overhead is a share of revenue, not of cost. Adding 18 percent of cost recovers less than 18 percent of the price, and the shortfall grows with every job.
Why does the equivalent markup look so high?
Because a markup has to cover burden, overhead and profit all at once. A markup in the thirties on direct cost is normal once everything is accounted for.
Where do I get my own numbers?
Burden from your payroll and comp rates, overhead from your annual accounts divided by revenue, and margin from what you need the business to earn.
