Painting exterior railings comes down to two things: matching the prep to the material, and beating the geometry. Railings are almost entirely edges, curves and awkward angles, which means slow coverage and a constant fight against drips and runs. Get the material specific prep right and pick a method that suits the shape, and the rest is patience.

Fix the railing before you paint it

Grab the rail and shake it. If it moves, stop. A wobbly railing is a structural problem, not a cosmetic one, and paint does not fix structure. Railings exist to stop people falling, and a loose one on a balcony or a set of steps is a serious hazard that a fresh coat only disguises.
Check the fixings into the wall or deck, the base plates on posts, the welds on metalwork, and the base of timber posts where they enter the ground or the deck. Corrosion at a base plate and rot at a post base are the two classic failures, and both are hidden right where the fixing is. Repair or replace before painting. Then paint, because you will not want to touch it again for years.
Identify the material first
The prep for each material is genuinely different, and the wrong primer is the reason most railing repaints fail early.
Bare or rusted steel and wrought iron
Old railings, gate ironwork and traditional balustrades are usually steel or wrought iron. They rust, and rust is the whole job.
Here is the honest point that most people skip: paint over live rust always fails. Rust keeps working underneath the coating, expanding as it goes, and it pushes the new paint off from below. It may take a season or it may take two, but it will happen. There is no primer that makes painting over active flaking rust a good plan.
So remove it. Wire brush by hand for light surface rust, use a wire wheel or an abrasive disc on a grinder for heavier scale, and get back to sound metal or at least to tightly bonded material. Feather the edges of remaining paint. Where pitting is deep, a rust converter or rust treatment can stabilise what remains in the pits, but treat that as a supplement to mechanical removal, not a replacement for it. Follow the product label for dwell time and overcoating.
Then prime immediately. Bare steel starts flash rusting within hours in damp air, so do not brush it back on Saturday and prime it next weekend. Galvanised metal
Galvanised railings have a dull grey, slightly crystalline surface, often with a spangled pattern. This is the material that catches people out. Ordinary paint peels off galvanising in sheets, because the zinc surface is both slick and chemically unfriendly to standard binders.
Galvanised metal needs either an etch primer or a direct to metal primer specifically rated for galvanised surfaces. Prep is a thorough degrease first, because new galvanising often carries an oily protective film, then a light abrade to give a key, then the correct primer. Brand new galvanising is the hardest case of all and some coatings advise letting it weather before painting. Aluminium
Aluminium railings are light, do not rust, and usually carry a factory finish. The failure mode is white powdery oxidation rather than orange rust. Degrease, remove any oxidation back to sound metal, abrade the factory finish so it is no longer glossy, clean off the dust, then use a self etching or adhesion promoting primer suited to non ferrous metal. Timber railings
Timber handrails, balusters and newel posts are a different job again. Wash off dirt and mildew, sand back rough and weathered fibres, and spot prime every bare patch with an exterior wood primer.
Watch two places in particular. End grain drinks water, so the cut ends of balusters, the tops of posts and any exposed cut edge need primer worked in properly. And the top of a newel post is a horizontal surface outdoors, which means water sits on it, so it is nearly always the first place a timber railing fails. Some painters add a small chamfer or a cap to shed water. At minimum, prime the top thoroughly and give it the same number of coats as everything else. Check for rot at the base of posts with a screwdriver tip before committing to a repaint.

The geometry problem
A railing has very little flat area and enormous surface complexity. A balustrade with slim spindles might take longer to coat than a whole wall of the same visual size, because you are working every side of every piece.
Two consequences follow. First, budget far more time than the visual size suggests. People consistently underestimate railings. Second, drips and runs are your main enemy. Every spindle is a vertical surface with edges on all sides, and paint pools on the underside of the handrail, at the joint where a spindle meets the rail, and along the bottom of each section.
The fix is straightforward but requires discipline: thin coats, more of them. Load the brush lightly, work the paint out, and go back over each section after a minute or two to catch the sags before they set. Do not try to get coverage in one pass on metalwork. Two thin coats beat one thick coat every time, and on a railing a thick coat guarantees runs.
Brush, spray or mitt
Brush
The default and usually the right answer for a domestic railing. A brush pushes paint into pitting, into welds and into the joints where a spindle meets the rail, which is exactly where corrosion restarts. Use a smaller brush than feels natural. Spray
Fast and gives a beautiful finish on complex ironwork, and it is genuinely the best tool for ornate decorative metalwork with scrolls and detail. The catch is overspray. Railings are open, so most of what you spray goes past the railing rather than onto it, which wastes material and lands on whatever is behind. Spraying also does not push paint into pits and joints the way a brush does, so many painters spray for coverage then back brush the critical areas. Mitt or glove
A painting mitt worn over a glove lets you wrap your hand around a spindle and coat all sides in one movement. On a long run of plain round or square spindles this is dramatically faster than brushing each face. It is messier, it does not suit ornate profiles, and you still need a brush for the joints, but for a plain balustrade it earns its place. Wear a proper glove underneath and use one hand for the mitt so the other stays clean.
Masking below and around
Overspray and drips on the driveway is the single most common complaint after a railing job, and concrete does not let go of paint.
- Sheet the entire area under and around the railing, not just directly beneath it. Drips travel further than you expect, and spray drift travels much further.
- Weigh sheeting down at the edges. A sheet that lifts in a gust is worse than no sheet, because it flips paint onto the surface it was protecting.
- Mask the wall where a handrail meets it, and mask the deck boards where posts land.
- If spraying, screen off well beyond the immediate area, and check what is downwind. Parked cars are the expensive version of this mistake.

Do not skip the underside and the far side
The two areas that always get missed on a railing are the underside of the handrail and the face that points away from where you are standing. Both are invisible from the approach, which is exactly why people skip them, and both are where failure starts because they never get direct sun to dry out.
Work each section from all four aspects deliberately. Do the far side first while you are still clean, then the underside, then the top and near face. On a balcony rail, that may mean working from both sides of the railing, which is fine on the ground and needs proper planning at height.
Fall safety
Railings are on balconies, stairs and elevated decks by definition. That means the surface you are painting is the thing that would otherwise stop you falling, and while you are working on it you are leaning over it, reaching around it and standing next to a drop.
- Never lean your weight on a railing you have not verified. Check the fixings before you trust it, especially on older balconies.
- If the railing is loose, do not paint it. Fix it. This is not a judgement call.
- On stairs, use a ladder rated and set up for stair use, or a stair platform. A standard ladder with one foot on a tread and one on the flight below is unstable.
- Set ladders on firm level ground and keep your hips between the stiles. Move the ladder rather than reaching.
- Wet paint on a handrail is slippery. If the rail is on a stairway people use, plan the work so the flight is not in use while the paint is wet.
- Watch for freshly coated rungs and wet soles. That is how painters fall off ladders they set up correctly.

Weather and cure time
Paint railings on a dry, mild day with no rain in the forecast for long enough after you finish. Metal has a specific extra problem: it holds condensation. A metal railing can be dry to the touch in the afternoon and beaded with dew an hour after sunset, so finishing late in the day on a cool evening risks dew landing on uncured paint. Start early, finish early.
Avoid direct hot sun on dark metal too. Hot metal flashes the surface of the paint while the film underneath stays soft, which gives you a coating that looks cured and is not.
Cure time is the part everyone rushes. Touch dry is not cured. A railing gets handled, leaned on, and rubbed by clothing and bags, and a coating that has not hardened will mark, print and pick up dirt permanently. Keep people off it for as long as the product data sheet says, and if in doubt give it longer. Tape off the ends of a handrail run and leave a note if the family will forget. Working sequence
- Check the structure and fix anything loose or rotten.
- Sheet and mask everything below and behind.
- Wash the railing and let it dry completely.
- Remove rust, loose paint and oxidation mechanically. Feather edges.
- Degrease, especially on galvanised and aluminium.
- Prime with the correct primer for the material, same day where bare metal is exposed.
- First topcoat, thin, working far side then underside then near side.
- Check for sags after a few minutes and brush them out.
- Respect the recoat time, then apply the second topcoat the same way.
- Keep the railing out of use until it has properly cured.
