How to Paint Exterior Stairs (Timber, Concrete and Metal Steps)

This guide covers outdoor steps: the timber flight up to a deck, the concrete stoop at the front door, the metal fire escape treads at the back. It is not about the staircase inside your house. Exterior stairs differ from every other painted surface in two ways that decide the whole job. They get walked on, so you need a floor grade or porch and patio grade coating rather than wall paint. And they get wet, so slip resistance is a safety requirement rather than a nice extra. Everything below follows from those two facts.

Why exterior stairs need a different coating

Standard exterior wall paint is formulated to sit on a vertical surface and shed water. It is not formulated to take shoes, grit, dragged furniture and standing water. Put it on a tread and it will wear through at the nosing within a season, then start lifting.

What you want is a coating category described as porch and floor enamel, deck and patio coating, or floor paint rated for exterior foot traffic. There are water based and solvent based options in that category, and there are concrete specific and metal specific products within it. Match the product to the substrate and read the data sheet for the surfaces it is approved for. Slip resistance is not optional

A freshly coated stair tread is smoother than the substrate underneath it. Add rain, dew, frost or wet leaves and you have created a hazard where there was not one before. Painting exterior steps without addressing slip resistance makes the stairs more dangerous than leaving them bare.

There are two practical approaches.

Anti slip additive mixed or broadcast into the coating

Anti slip additives are fine aggregates, usually polymer or mineral, sold specifically for mixing into floor coatings. Two methods work. You can stir the additive into the paint and keep stirring throughout application, because it settles fast and the last of the tin will otherwise be gritless. Or you can broadcast it, meaning you apply the coating, sprinkle the additive over the wet film, then seal it with a second coat. Broadcasting gives a more even and usually more aggressive texture, and it is the better method on treads.

Follow the additive manufacturer instructions for the ratio and the method. Do not invent your own dose, and do not use sand from the garden, which is dirty, inconsistent and does not bond reliably.

Grit strips on the nose

Adhesive anti slip tape or a strip applied across the front of each tread targets the exact spot where a foot lands and where slips happen. This is a good option where you want the rest of the tread smooth for cleaning, or where an additive would look wrong on a decorative surface. Strips wear and need replacing periodically, so treat them as maintenance rather than a permanent fix.

You can combine both. A textured coating across the tread plus a strip at the nose is common on flights that get heavy or public use.

One thing to avoid: do not put slip claims on your own work. Coefficient of friction figures and slip ratings belong to tested products, and the manufacturer data sheet is the authority. Choose a product that states what it does and follow it.

Prep by substrate

Timber steps

Clean first. Timber steps collect algae, mildew and ground in dirt, and every bit of it stops adhesion. Wash thoroughly and let the timber dry properly. Damp timber under a coating is a peeling job waiting to happen, and outdoor timber holds moisture longer than it looks like it does.

Then sand. You are knocking back weathered surface fibres and dulling any remaining sound coating for adhesion. Scrape off anything loose. Feather the edges of paint that is staying so there is no visible ridge.

Check for rot at the same time. Press a screwdriver tip into the tread ends, the bottom of the stringers where they meet the ground, and the underside of the bottom step. Those are the three spots that fail. Soft timber on a stair is a safety problem, not a cosmetic one, so replace the affected boards before coating. Then prime bare timber with an exterior wood primer, working it into end grain at the tread ends, which is where water enters.

Concrete steps

Concrete needs three things checked before anything else: cleanliness, moisture, and profile.

Degrease and clean the surface thoroughly. Concrete steps pick up oil, tyre marks, salt residue and organic growth, and coatings do not stick to any of it.

Check for a moisture problem. Concrete steps sit on the ground and can wick moisture up from below. A simple check is to tape a square of plastic sheet down tightly on the surface, leave it a day, and look for condensation underneath or darkening of the slab. If moisture is coming through, a coating will blister no matter how good your prep was, and you need to deal with the source or use a product rated for that condition.

Then get a profile. This is the step people skip. A steel trowelled or power floated concrete surface is dense and glassy, and a coating applied to it has nothing to grip, so it peels in sheets under foot traffic. Either acid etch the surface following the product instructions, or mechanically grind or abrade it. Mechanical profiling is more reliable and does not involve handling acid. After etching or grinding, rinse and let the concrete dry fully before priming.

Prime with a concrete or masonry primer suited to the topcoat, or use a self priming floor coating if the data sheet says the substrate is prepared correctly for it.

Metal steps

Metal treads, usually on fire escapes and external service stairs, are a rust job. Remove the rust mechanically with a wire brush, wire wheel or abrasive disc, back to sound metal. Treat deep pitting with a rust converter if you like, following the label. Then prime with a direct to metal primer rated for exterior use, and do it promptly, because bare steel flash rusts within hours in damp air.

Check the structure while you are there. Rust that has eaten through a tread or a fixing is a structural failure and the flight should not be used until it is repaired. Paint over a compromised metal tread is genuinely dangerous.

The alternate tread trick

Here is the sequencing problem: if you coat every tread at once, nobody can use the stairs until it dries, and if the stairs are the only way in or out of the house that is not workable.

The solution is to do every other tread. Coat treads one, three, five and so on, let them dry, then come back and coat two, four, six. While the first set is drying people can step on the second set, and vice versa. It takes two sessions rather than one, but the flight stays usable throughout.

Two caveats. First, stepping on alternate treads means longer strides, which is itself a trip risk, so it suits an able bodied household rather than a route used by children or anyone unsteady. Second, you still need to keep feet off the wet ones, which means marking clearly rather than assuming people will notice.

If the stairs are not the only access, the better answer is simply to close the flight, do the whole thing properly in one go, and leave it undisturbed. Paint applied in one continuous session across the whole flight also avoids the faint lap lines you can get when adjacent treads are coated at different times.

Close the flight while it cures

Whichever sequence you use, mark the stairs as closed and mean it. A rope or tape across the top and bottom, plus a written note, is the minimum. A wet coated stair is slippery, and a person walking onto it in the dark because nobody told them is exactly the scenario that ends badly.

  • Barrier the top and the bottom of the flight, not just one end.
  • Write a sign. Tape alone gets ignored or blows off.
  • Tell everyone in the household, including anyone due to visit or deliver.
  • Think about the dark. If the flight is on a route used at night, keep it closed until it is fully cured, not just until it is touch dry.
  • Consider pets, who do not read signs and who will track paint through the house.

Drainage and standing water

Before coating, look at where water goes. Exterior stairs should shed water off the front of each tread. If a tread is dished, has settled backwards, or holds a puddle after rain, that standing water will sit on your new coating constantly and will find any weak point.

Fix the drainage where you can. Level or repair a dished concrete tread. Clear blocked drainage at the foot of the flight. On timber, check that the treads still slope slightly forward and that debris is not packed into the gaps between boards, which is what dams water in the first place.

Also look at what is happening at the bottom step. Steps that meet soil or a path where water collects rot and spall from the bottom up, and a coating will not stop that. Improve drainage first if you want the finish to last.

Application and cure

  1. Prep and prime as above, matched to the substrate.
  2. Work top to bottom so you finish at the base and are not stepping across wet work.
  3. Coat the risers and the tread together for each step, keeping a wet edge across the tread width.
  4. Apply the anti slip additive by the method the product specifies, either mixed in with constant stirring or broadcast into the wet film.
  5. Respect the recoat time on the label before the second coat.
  6. Apply the second coat, which on a broadcast system is what locks the aggregate in.
  7. Keep the flight closed until the product has cured, not merely until it is touch dry.

Cure time is where people cause themselves problems. Floor grade coatings often have a short time to light foot traffic and a much longer time to full hardness, and the full figure is the one that matters on stairs, because a partly cured film scuffs, prints and picks up grit permanently. Cool weather and high humidity extend both figures, sometimes considerably. The product data sheet is the authority. Do not treat a number you read in a forum as a guarantee.

On weather, coat on a dry mild day with a clear forecast. Exterior stairs are horizontal, so overnight dew lands directly on them, and dew on an uncured floor coating causes clouding and a weak surface. Fall risk on a wet or freshly coated stair

This needs stating plainly. Stairs are already the highest fall risk surface around a house. A wet coating on a stair removes what little friction the substrate had, and a freshly cured smooth coating without slip resistance is not much better once it rains.

  • Never leave a wet coated flight open and unmarked, even for a short trip to the van.
  • Barrier both ends and post a sign, because people approach stairs from both directions.
  • Include slip resistance in the specification from the start rather than deciding to add it later.

  • Do not use a standard ladder on a stair flight for the upper areas. Use a stair platform or a ladder designed for uneven footing.
  • Wear footwear with grip and keep paint off your soles.

Common mistakes

  • Using exterior wall paint on treads. It is not a traffic coating and wears through at the nosing.

  • Skipping the moisture check on concrete and getting blisters within weeks.
  • Leaving slip resistance out, then adding a slippery smooth surface to an outdoor stair.

  • Doing the whole flight at once when it is the only route into the house.
  • Reopening the stairs at touch dry rather than at full cure.
